Vignetteing

Postby evermail on Sat May 09, 2009 9:13 pm

Hey everyone. So I've been shooting with an old Nikkor-S Nikon 50mm 1.4 and there's quite a bit of blurry vignetting going on and I'm thinking it's the lens' fault. I've also noticed a bit of barrel distortion which also tells me it's the lens. This is because I'm using a very, very expensive camera rig (one of those full-size Panasonic P2 cams) and I know it's not that or it's Fujinon lens. So I KNOW it's the little $50 ebay Nikon lens from 1974....right?

Right?

So, of course, the only solution is to grab a much better lens, possibly the best such as a Carl Zeiss. Right?

Any suggestions?

Its could be the lens...maybe but a 50mm shouldn't vignette. Do you or anyone you know have another nikon lens you could try? If you are using a professional P2 cam, you should have a budget for a lens kit worth more than $50. No reason to go Zeiss though. Let us know how it looks with any other lens. I'm sure you can find a Nikon to test somewhere.

Just because my cameras and their bundled lenses are expensive doesn't mean I go blow my money on stuff. I wanted to know the RNG would work before I invested in several thousand dollars in glass. I didn't even buy the RNG for several months and then waited some more when I knew the 3.1 was to be released (and I'm glad I waited).

What I need is someone near by who has quality Nikon-mountable glass but the only other photogs I know use either Canon or Sony. I have some really nice L-series Canon stuff, but everyone else I know who has Canon, Sony or the one guy I know nearby who has a Nikon SLR, all have cheaper stuff. Still, 1990-something cheap is still better than 1970-something cheap so if I can get ahold of what's-his-name with the Nikon gear then I'll do some tests.

I'm still 99% sure it's not the RNG since I've (long story short) done my homework.
